Between 2011 and 2022, the number of Albert Heijn supermarkets increased nearly year-on-year. In that last year, there were approximately 1,150 supermarkets belonging to the chain in the Netherlands. Over 186 of these supermarkets were in the province Zuid-Holland (which includes cities as The Hague and Rotterdam), whereas more rural Zeeland only had 17 AH supermarkets in 2020.

Albert Heijn traditionally had the reputation of being among the pricier supermarkets in the Netherlands, and its clientele still reflect this. Although the supermarket chain is trying to get rid of this image, it is not clear how successful Albert Heijn has been in appealing to lower-income groups. Over one third of the customers belong to well-to-do segments of the population, whereas lower-income households and pensioners make up just 22.2 percent of Albert Heijn clients.
